NLM Vancouver: cite a report
Cite a scientific or technical report in NLM style, with place, publisher and year, followed by the supplied Report No.: 17.
Report number at the end
In the NLM form for a report, the place, publisher and year come first and the supplied report number closes the entry as Report No.: 17. This simple example has no separate sponsor or performing organization. NLM's Citing Medicine chapter on scientific and technical reports is linked below.
With the number supplied, the NLM report entry is: 1. Stone M. A sample report. London: Example Institute; 2024. Report No.: 17.
Entering the numbered report
Report designation is not needed for NLM; it is used by the IEEE form, which prints a label such as Tech. Rep. before the number. In this NLM entry the number always follows Report No.: as shown.
- Choose NLM Citing Medicine numbered reference and Report with individual authors, with Print version.
- Enter Maya Stone, and type A sample report in both Source title and Reviewed sentence-case title.
- Fill London as the place, Example Institute as Publisher and 2024.
- Set Report-number availability to A report number is supplied and type 17.
- Press Create reference.
When there is no number
If the report has no assigned number, choose The source has no assigned report number and leave the field empty; the entry then ends after the year. Leaving the setting on Not yet checked holds the entry. The place is required for NLM reports. Reports with several organizations or several report numbers need their own source details and are outside this workbench version, as is the online form of a report for NLM.
A number left in the field after you chose The source has no assigned report number is treated as a contradiction, and the entry is held until the two agree.
The report in Citelle
The app's Report type has Publisher, City, Edition and University / institution, but no field for a report number. Its Vancouver entry for a report gives place, publisher and year, so add Report No.: 17. yourself or build the entry in the workbench when the number matters. Vancouver is a Pro style in the app.
If you found the report by DOI, the app takes the publisher from the record and shows it as the institution; compare it with the report's title page.
Report checks
- The publisher is the organization that issued the report, not the funder.
- Copy the number exactly as printed, with its own label.
- Do not take a journal issue for a report number.
- Check which version of the report you consulted.
- Keep the place of the issuing organization, London here, in the publication place field.
Gather the source details
- Inspect the report’s title and publication pages.
- Record an actual individual or organizational author.
- Keep any supplied report number with the source.
- Verify which organization published the work and which version you read.
