NLM Vancouver: cite a published conference paper
Cite a paper in published proceedings in NLM style with meeting dates 2024 Jun 1-2, meeting place, editor, place, publisher and pages.
Meeting details belong in this entry
Unlike the APA and Chicago examples, the NLM form builds the meeting into the entry from its own fields. After the proceedings title come the meeting dates in year, month and day order, 2024 Jun 1-2, and the meeting place, London, before the publication details. This is a published-proceedings record, not a citation for an unpublished presentation. NLM's Citing Medicine chapter on conference publications is linked below.
For the symposium paper, the NLM example is: 1. Stone M. A conference paper. In: Rowan L, editor. Proceedings of the Sample Symposium; 2024 Jun 1-2; London. London: Example Press; 2024. p. 12-18.
Recording the symposium paper
Meeting dates are entered as full dates in year-month-day form, as in 2024-06-01. An incomplete or impossible date, such as 2024-02-30, is rejected with a message naming the meeting date field.
- Choose NLM Citing Medicine numbered reference and Published conference paper, with Print version.
- Add Maya Stone as author and Leo Rowan as editor.
- Type A conference paper and Proceedings of the Sample Symposium.
- Fill Meeting location London, Meeting start date 2024-06-01 and Meeting end date 2024-06-02.
- Add London as the publication place, Example Press, 2024 and pages 12-18, then press Create reference.
Required fields and date format
For NLM, the workbench requires the meeting start date, end date and location, the editors and the publisher. A missing meeting location, for example, holds the entry with Meeting location: provide the source information. Both meeting dates must be complete calendar dates, and the end date cannot be earlier than the start. When both days fall in the same month the entry shortens them to 2024 Jun 1-2. The meeting place and the publisher's place are separate fields, even though both are London here.
The paper in Citelle
The app's Conference paper type has Proceedings title, Pages, Publisher and City, but no meeting date or meeting place fields. Its Vancouver entry therefore cannot show 2024 Jun 1-2; London. Build this case in the workbench, or add the meeting details to the entry yourself, and check that editors came with the looked-up record.
Vancouver is a Pro style in the app, and Copy in-text gives the entry's list number in parentheses.
Conference checks
- Check that the paper was published in the proceedings.
- Keep the meeting place apart from the publisher's city.
- Use the meeting's actual first and last days.
- Use the year the proceedings were published, not only the meeting year.
- Do not shorten the proceedings title; the workbench prints it exactly as typed.
Gather the source details
- Find the published paper and its proceedings record.
- Keep paper author and paper title separate from proceedings editors and title.
- Record publication details and the paper’s pages.
